58100 is a variable display typeface developed during a one-week university workshop. The name comes from the postal code of Grosseto, my hometown, anchoring the project in its territorial and cultural identity. The goal was to translate the morphological and architectural features of the city into a coherent and contemporary typographic system.
The letterforms are built upon modular grids and geometric proportions inspired by the hexagonal plan of the Medicean walls, a defining element of Grosseto’s urban structure. Its square serifs and sharp corners echo the design of the bastions, while the balance between rigid lines and controlled curves reflects the tension between Renaissance rationality and Tuscan materiality. Designed as a variable font along weight and slant axes, 58100 allows for a dynamic modulation of stroke thickness and inclination, adapting to different levels of visual rhythm and typographic emphasis.
